Laptop ProgramCollege of Engineering Laptop PolicyMost engineering courses now utilize multimedia-based courseware, requiring students to have and use laptop computers, connected via a wireless network, in both the classroom and laboratories. The mobile laptops, coupled with the wireless local area network in all engineering buildings, allow students to access web-based course materials anywhere in the expanding wireless coverage area. The technology is used to improve teaching and learning, and provide anytime/anywhere communications between faculty and students. All students with majors in the College of Engineering are expected to have a laptop computer throughout their curricula. Laptop RequirementsAbility to send and receive email including attachments Ability to browse the network and download files Ability to read CD-ROM and DVD media Ability to communicate to external devices over a USB 2.0 port Ability to read and write documents in Microsoft Office format University students are eligible to purchase Microsoft Office at a significant discount at http://itstore.ou.edu or the university bookstore. Other office suites such as Open Office can read and write in the proper format and are available at no cost. Recommended Laptop Specifications for 2008-2009
Discounted Dell laptops meeting the recommended and minimum standard are available at dell.com/ou-coe What about a Mac? Students who wish to use an Apple laptop should be aware of some limitations. Not all engineering software is compatible with OS X. Students using Macs will need to purchase additional software in order to use Windows within OS X or use this software in the labs. Apple products are available at a discount at itstore.ou.edu Support InfrastructureInformation Technology and the College of Engineering have partnered to provide a support infrastructure for the laptop policy. This includes wireless coverage, repair services, network file storage, and classrooms with additional power and network capability. Wireless:All College of Engineering buildings (Felgar Hall, Carson Engineering Center and Engineering Lab) have wireless coverage throughout. To connect, simply choose the network called “ANY”.Click here to see the campus wireless map and IT Service Center locations Repair Services:The IT Service Center in Felgar Hall, Room 300 provides College of Engineering students support for all their computing needs. The IT Service Center is a Dell and Apple certified warranty repair center, but repairs all brands of computers. This service is free of charge, but students must pay for any parts or additional software required. There are also two other IT Service Centers on campus, located in Gould Hall room 264 and Couch Tower room W146. Our Couch location is open 24 hours for your convenience.Network Storage:200 MB of network storage space is provided for students to store homework, project or other files. This space is automatically mapped as H:\ in the engineering computer labs. For assistance connecting to the H:\ drive from home or wireless, contact the IT Service Desk at 325-HELP, visit the Felgar Hall 300, or log on to http://support.ou.edu.Virtual Lab:Due to the number and expense of specialized engineering applications, we have created the Virtual Lab. The Virtual Lab allows access OU and College of Engineering software remotely through student laptops or home computers. To access this feature from off campus, students need a high speed connection (Cable or DSL) and the University VPN software available at http://itstore.ou.edu.To access to the Virtual Lab, go to http://www.coe.ou.edu/en/page/virtuallabhelp/
Financial Aid:To help aid in the purchase of a new laptop, students may apply for the Robert B. Lewis Computer Loan at http://financialaid.ou.edu/forms/2007-2008/Inst_Loan_Appl.pdf |
