GAANN FELLOWSHIPS IN BIOENGINEERING

OUBC is pleased to announce the availability of Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Fellowships.in Bioengineering at The University of Oklahoma.  Individuals selected for a fellowship will receive a stipend up to $30,000/year (based on need) along with money for books, tuition and fees to support their participation in an exciting and challenging educational experience.  The unique program leading to a Ph.D. in Bioengineering will prepare U.S. nationals or permanent residents for an academic or industrial career.

Activities include practical instruction on teaching methods, working as a co-instructor of a course, and an industrial practicum with a local biotechnology company.  Fellows will also have the opportunity to work on important problems of interest with a member of our distinguished faculty for their dissertation research.  Projects range from imaging technologies to improve the diagnosis of breast cancer to investigating the neural code of the olfactory system.  You might choose to help develop a tissue engineered blood vessel(TEBV) that could ultimately be used as a vascular graft for coronary bypass surgery.  There are projects in biomechanics using computational models to understand the workings of the ossicles in the middle ear under normal and pathologic conditions. At the cellular level,

bioengineering students are studying the role of tether formation in leukocyte adhesion. Other projects involve using genetic engineering or nanotechnology to produce novel agents for the treatment of breast and other cancers.

THE UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT

The University of Oklahoma continues to evolve as a leading public university in the region and the nation. It ranks first among the Big 12 universities in the growth of federal research funding and in the top 5 in the nation among all comprehensive public universities in the number of National Merit Scholars enrolled per capita and in the graduation of Rhodes Scholars. OU recently created an Honors College and is developing one of the largest honors programs among public universities in the United States. OU also has a diverse student community and is a leader among the Big 12 universities in the enrollment of Native American, Latin American, Asian American, and African American students.

Norman, Oklahoma is a vibrant, mid-sized college town with a low cost of living and numerous cultural attractions, including museums, a historic downtown and annual arts and music festivals. It is located within driving distance of the larger metropolitan areas of Oklahoma City (30 minutes), Tulsa (2 hours), and Dallas (3 hours). Numerous outdoor recreation opportunities can be found at the many federal and state parks, nearly all of which can be reached by car within three hours.
